TV Stand

Of all my projects this is one of the least documented as it took me years to complete, one of my projects I would come back to between other ones I was working on.

The idea for this project was to make a nice TV stand on a smaller budget. I already had all the woodworking tools necessary and just needed to pay for the materials of this projects. Looking online I found multiple sites that talked about pulling inspiration from popular brands in making their own sets for a fraction of the price.

Going on that idea I looked at a few luxury home decor website and started sketching an idea in SketchUp, a 3d modeling program. My design was unique as I was designing it specifically for my bedroom at the time. It would sit at the base of my bed and half the draws would have access from both the front and the back so I could access it from either end.

I started with the base/feet of the stand. 2x3’s with some cross braces and custom cut feet. I built a jig to ensure all pieces were cut and secured together at the correct angles. Moving onto the main unit I build a box out of 3/4in birch plywood using pocket hole screws and wood glue to ensure the pieces did not come apart. Shelves were mounted in the middle and a back plate was put on. As mentioned earlier the back place was not the full height of the unit so as to allow access from both sides.

The final piece was the draw units. The bottom pieces were pull out draws so after building the boxes standard hardware was installed to allow for the draws to be pulled out. Because of the top shelf being accessed by both sides I only used hinges and draw fronts for easy access.

With the hardware complete all that was left was finishing. For a unique look I stained all the draws cherry and painted the shelves/exterior a gloss white. After finishing coats of polyurethane the hardware handles were mounted and the TV Stand put into place.

This is one of the projects I am most proud of for being the first big one I took on as well as it still being used daily and having survived across multiple moves cross country!
