Lightsaber mount

After getting a lightsaber and having it sit in the corner of the closet I wanted a way to be able to mount it on the wall in an artistic way. I found the idea online to build a vertical mount which mimics the logo a game I use to play, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. After loading up a reference image in Blender I was able to design the 3d mount that would fit around the custom lightsaber.

With the 3d model completed the next step was to print it out. My 3d printer’s bed is too small to fit the entire mount on it so the model was cut up into 8 different pieces. Once everything was in hand they were glued back together and then the cleanup process could begin. My 3d printer is an FDM style printer and a printing byproduct is hundreds of tiny “layer line” bumps that need to be smoothed out before painting the final coats. I first started with some bondo to fill in any gaps between the 8 glued pieces. Sanded that down and applied a few coats of a primer/filler spray paint which can also help fill in the gaps between layer lines.

After more sanding up to a 400 grit smooth finish it was time to do the final coats of black paint. Mounting holes were incorporated into the design so the print could easily be attached to any wall giving the ultimate lightsaber presentation.
